Hatfield PSIFA
Who was who?

This compilation was initially made as part of a series of articles to mark 40 years of Hatfield PSIFA.

Introduction
Hatfield PSIFA is (or was depending on when you are reading this) the student science fiction society of Hatfield Polytechnic, subsequently rebranded as Hertfordshire University (ref. 1).

PSIFA stands for the Polytechnic ScIence Fiction/fantasy Association.

The black & white version of the logo with the society's name, as used for sweat shirts can be downloaded from here, full size, for printing on A3-sized paper should a new generation of students wish to get their own sweatshirts made.

The 2nd year PSIFA promotional leaflet, with a list of its first year events, is here.

Who was who in PSIFA
Over its first four decades, in total roughly 1,000 students have been PSIFA members!  And that is a quite realistic estimate (ref. 2).  Many were active in different ways: at times PSIFA ran writers' workshops, field trips to conventions and films, even gaming nights, etc.  But at the end of the day it was PSIFA's officers who were answerable to the students union and who took a lead in most matters.  So who were these souls?  We have begun to attempt to list them below.

Footnotes:-

Ref. 1.  Change of title from 'Polytechnic' to 'University'.  Of course the rebranding of 'Polytechnic' to 'University' is merely a matter of words that in the broadest sense largely have the same meaning.  'Poly' comes from the Greek polu meaning 'much' andpolloi meaning 'many'.  'Technic' comes from the Latin technicus or the Greek tekhne meaning art.  Meanwhile 'Uni' comes from the Latin unus 'one' or 'forming one', and 'verse' from the Latin versari meaning 'to be engaged with' as, in versed, and also the Latin universitas 'the whole world'.  So you can take your choice: polytechnic, a place to study many arts/skills; or, university where you come to one place to engage in studying the whole world.

Ref. 2.  Estimate calculation of the total PSIFA membership over the years relies on some simple and conservative estimates.  At the time (2019) of originally compiling this article (ignoring any possible subsequent updates) PSIFA had been going 40 years. Courses are typically three years long with some having a fourth external, industrial placement year which for most means away from campus and so these fourth years can be ignored. Therefore potential cohort recruitment years (think ecology and 'life tables') are 40/3 = 13.3333.  Assuming that the early years of PSIFA membership levels of over 100 waned to say an overall mean of 75 (to keep things simple), then the estimated total number of individual students belonging to PSIFA = 13.3333 x 75 which = 1,000.
