Graphic Novel/Comics Review

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Food Chain

(2001) various writers and artists, Titan Books, £10.99, tpb, 166pp, ISBN 1-84023-315-X

Seven brief tales reprinted from various Dark Horse Comics sources, including the work of Buffy novelist Christopher Golden and writer for the TV series Doug Petrie, set during seasons three and four of the series. Needless to say the quality of the tales vary. In my opinion "The Latest Craze" (story by Golden and Sniegoskie, art by Richards and Pimentel) is the closest in feel to the show, and has the best dialogue, but the best of the artwork has to be Christian Zanier's in "The Food Chain" parts one and two (also by Golden), though I've a personal soft spot for Chynna Clugston-Major's writing and art on "Punish Me with Kisses", a story starring Willow and Tara. It's a substantial package - definitely one for the fans - but the casual reader will probably find this lightweight and disappointing.
