Sandman: The Dream Hunters

(1999) Neil Gaiman and Yoshitaka Amano, Titan Books, £12.99, trdpbk, 128pp

Beautiful illustrated text story set in the Sandman universe, retelling an old Japanese fairy tale. A fox and a badger try to drive a young monk from his temple in order to live there, but they fail and the fox falls in love with the monk. Discovering that the monk’s life is in danger from an onmyoji, a master of Yin-Yang, the fox turns to the king of dreams for help... Amano contributes 70 incredible watercolours to this tale, capturing aspects of the Sandman rarely seen in the series. The richness and vivacity of the art finely compliments the lyricism of Gaiman’s simple, yet elegant, prose. A triumph.
