Seven Soldiers of Victory vol.1

(2006) Grant Morrison, Titan Books, £9.99, trdpbk, 224pp, ISBN 1-84576236-3

This is the first of four volumes (the next three scheduled for March, May and July respectively) collecting the seven four-issue mini-series and "bookend" two-parter from last year. This book has the opening chapters of the Zatanna, Shining Knight, Guardian and Klarion the Witchboy series as well as the opening "bookend". Still to come is Mister Miracle, Bulleteer and Frankenstein. Needless to say, it's all a bit messy, though it has to be said that the various artists' work actually sits rather neatly side-by-side. You have JH Williams III (of Promethea fame) on the opening tale; Simone Bianchi on Shining Knight; Cameron Stewart on Guardian; Ryan Sook and Mick Gray (the latter also from Promethea) on Zatanna; and Frazer Irving on Witchboy (doing a fairly good imitation of P Craig Russell). There are tons of 'guest stars' along the way as the heroes separately, yet strangely together, battle the invading Sheeda, who seem set on "harvesting" humankind. Can our plucky heroes defend us against The Harrowing...? Find out in three volumes' time!
