Top Ten Chart - 2020/21

SF² Concatenation's annual calculation looking at the 52 British Isles (and Malta) weekly film (movie) charts up to Easter 2021 that accounts for only fantastic films (SF and fantasy).

This has been cancelled due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic closure of cinemas

We will take this opportunity to shift this annual top ten from April to our January edition

Due to the SARS-CoV-2 / COVD-19 pandemic, across the globe cinemas closed with films postponed and conventions and film fests cancelled.  Consequently, there is zero point compiling a top ten for 2020/21.

However, we can take this as an opportunity to improve the annual top ten whose 12-months-to-Easter coverage is today something of an oddity.  You have to remember that SF² Concatenation began life in 1987 as an annual print zine, paid for by advertising and distributed at the British national SF convention -- the UK Eastercon.  As its name suggests, this event takes place over the four-day Easter holiday weekend and so it made sense back then to have the annual chart of films (back then based on the video rental chart) track the 12 months to Easter.

All well and good, but with the demise of video rentals due to the increase in FreeView TV channels, in 2005 we switched from basing the chart on the weekly video/DVD charts to the weekly cinema charts. This made our film charts more relevant to our site visitors of the day.

Nonetheless, we still covered the 12-month period up till Easter, a hangover from our Eastercon print days.  Given that 2020/21 has seen nearly all cinema releases cancelled/postponed, it now seems an opportune time to shift our annual top ten from April, instead to be posted in January and cover the preceding year.  We feel that this move will make these charts more useful to our regulars and timely for those voting on the subsequent year's various SF awards at conventions.  We hope you agree.

Therefore, we hope to see you in January 2022.
